bamboo ladel

Does anyone know where to obtain bamboo ladels? This thing is a section of
bamboo about two inches in diameter with a closed end and the open end is
sliced on the diagonal. There is a handle attached in the side so that it
looks something like a pipe, but the "stem" is not hollow. The one that I
saw came from Japan, of course, so I am wondering if there is a mail order
source.

Thanks.

Pam:

They are easy to make. Find a piece of bamboo (there are places on the internet
where you can order) the diameter that you want. the nodes on the bamboo make a
natural closed end so if you cut between the nodes on a diagonal you have the
piece you are looking for. Tape the bamboo where you want to cut and use a fine
tooth saw to cut through the taped area - them remove the tape.

Pam, that ladle is called a shaku. I got mine in Japan, you can make
your own all you need is some bamboo. There is a place in Seattle that
sells bamboo of all sizes. I can get the address and email (if they
have one) for you if you need it.

Pam,
Try calling "Bamboo Accents" at 1-800-783-0557. Or check out their
website at www.bambooaccents.com/ I suspect they can help you find these
ladles, which, if we are thinking of the same thing, are used in the tea
ceremony to transfer hot water from the big container to the tea bowl.
