I've always thought that Steve Branfman has been a class act when it comes
to posting on Clayart. In no way has he used this forum for advertising
purposes. He's shared his knowledge with us time and time again and if he
did happen to mention The Potters Shop, so what. Steve is a very generous
person and while he may feel uncomfortable talking about his books, I
certainly don't. I have both of them and I think they're very informative
and well-written. Until reading his latest book, "The Potter's Professional
Handbook", I was really "winging it" as far as the business end of my
pottery making was concerned. Between his book and Bonnie Hellman's advice
(she's my friend AND the CPA who saved me from myself),
I feel like I'm actually running my own business. Thanks to Steve's first
book, "Raku: A Practical Approach", I haven't burned off a single eyebrow
or eyelash since reading it. Talk about flying blind. I was clueless when
it came to raku the first time I attempted it. His book is a life saver if
you've never done raku and speaking of raku, this brings me to Harvey Sadow.
Since I'm usually behind on everything, this may have already been mentioned
on Clayart, but just in case, I thought I'd share it anyway.

I tape a few of the daytime decorating shows and watch them whenever I have
a chance. I finally sat down yesterday to watch a few Lynnette Jennings
Design shows which aired about 3 weeks ago. Before a commercial break, she
said when she returned she
would be visiting with a very famous potter and I was really curious as to
who it might be.
Well, it was Harvey Sadow! What a kick to see someone you know recognized
for their achievements on national television! He demonstrated his raku
techniques and his approach to throwing. He takes his time and it shows in
his work. Harvey makes some beautiful pots! He was very sincere and
passionate in explaining his philosophy and love of clay. I thought the
entire segment was first rate. Go Harvey!

For the most part, members of this group are reluctant to toot their own
horns. Granted, I'd much rather be around a modest person who is really
wonderful at what they do as opposed to a chronic bragger, BUT, I
wouldn't mind a bit if any of you mention a book you've written or a
television program you will appear on ahead of time. You should be proud of
your accomplishments and if you can't share them with friends, who can you
share them with?
