gerstley substitutes

Has anyone heard if any artificial substitutes have been developed yet
to deal with the gerstley shortage? I heard a rumor that several "big"
manufacturers were schedualed to have some products out soon to fill the
gap-but that was several weeks ago.

Read Jeff Zamek's excellent article on this whole issue in this
month's Ceramics Monthly.

It will probably take more than "several" weeks for them to
work out
and test some of the several alternatives. If it didn't,
then we would
all be complaining about the quality of the materials that
they "rushed"
to the market. We would probably be wanting them to pay for
our "lost"
pots, time, etc.

I spoke recently with Hammil and Gillespe Inc of New Jersey, who are
suppliers of Gerstley Borate in the East and Midwest, they assured me they
have on hand a year's supply of Gerstley Borate, and are working on
substitutes for when that runs out.

April issue of CM has an article on this.

Dear Clayarters:

Thanks for the response on the the gerstley substitutes question. I just got
my sample of MurraysBorate yesterday and I'll test it in my next glaze
firing. I'm just starting to play with cone 6 oxidation glazes so I'm not
married to any old recipes. I think it will be fun to formulate new glazes or
tweek old ones, using the new material and frits. I've always dreaded opening
the bucket of my cone 10 chuns and hoping that they hadn't flocculated since
I last used them. It will be a nice change to work with a more stable form of
ghastly b!

Warm regards,
June

Dear Clayarters,

I have done some testing with Laguna Borate and Murray's Borate. Most glazes
looked simillar to the color of the originals but Luguna worked better for me.
Soon, I will be doing another test tile dipping about 2 weeks after the
glazes were made to see if there is any difference.
