Hello,
This is in response to the problem of cones breaking in the kiln.
Orton makes between 30-35 million cones a year. Every batch of material and
every pressing of cones from this material go through extensive testing
before and during production. Every so often we will recieve an inquiry
about cones breaking in the sitter. We have found over the years that this
can usually be traced to damage that has occured during shipping. The cone
is an unfired product that can be affected by rough handling. The cones are
not affected by moist conditions unless they become soaking wet and they are
not affected by cold temperatures. I used to leave my cones outside during
the summer and winter without any problems occuring.
We do not want anyone to have a problem with our product and we go
to great extremes to prevent this. We cannot control the product once it is
out of our hands but we will try to help to solve any problem that does
occur. Orton is proud of and stands behind our products and our goals to
help people achieve better firings and the advancement of ceramics in
general.
If you have questions please contact me 614-895-2663 ext. 36 or by
e-mail. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Tim Frederich, Orton Ceramic Foundation
