formica, ceramics review, and sodium uranate

Well, I just want to get a bunch of topics in here.

I also use Formica for a photo background and really like it a lot. It
comes, by special order in 5 foot widths and that will do some pretty
large things.

After 20 years of playing with matte crystals with varying success, a
few weeks ago I began to look at zinc crystals and have done about 100
tests. There is an article in the magazine Ceramic Review which I'd like
to read but do not have the issue. Would someone be willing to copy this
article? It is called "The Crystal Maze" by Derek Clarkson and it is in
issue 137, 1992.

Is it possible to get sodium uranate to use as a glaze colorant? My
friend Tina said just to drink salt water but this is not what I have in
mind. Are uranium compounds available at all --- is it possible to get
some special approval to use them?

Thanks.

John

John:
At one time I had used Sodium uranate in my glazes, but as I became more
educated in glaze technology I realized that the radiation danger was hardly
worth the effort. Better check this out with Monona Rossoll.

The uranium sold for pottery use is "spent uranium". Nothing to be
concerned about. It is a nice yellow glaze colorant for cone 9 to 10. In a
low fired lead glaze you can get a wonderful orange red. If you cannot find
it in ceramic supply places try a chemistry supply place.
However there are yellow stains that will give you the same color effect.
