Dear Joseph.
You are absolutely right. Mea culpa. Yes, I meant depleted uranium. Was
given a lecture by my husband who has a Ph.D in nuclear physics about the
use of "spent" which might mean that the uranium came from a reactor.
Years ago when I fired to cone 10, I made a glaze containing uranium
as a colorant for a glaze on porcelain. I believe I got the recipe from
Cooper's book of Glaze recipes.The same color effect can be gotten from a
yellow glaze stain.
Thank you for your letter. This topic had been discussed on clayart some
time ago. My ill advised response was to someone who asked about where to
locate uranium and some other chemicals for glazes.

Having built an instrument containing many tons of depleted uranium metal,
I would like to assure you all that depleted uranium is very nearly as
active as natural uranium. It is not safer than natural uranium. From the
point of view of a potter, it is the same stuff. Uranium in any form is
radioactive. It is also a heavy metal, and poisonous. And it makes
pretty, warm coloured glazes. Who cares?
