old jenkins kiln

I was given an old Jenkins hexagonal shaped kiln. There was no manual
for it. It is 2'3" high by 24" wide. The walls are at least 2.5"
thick. Does anyone know anything about these types of kilns, where I
might get a manual, if they are safe to operate and how good they are?
I would like to start using it and I am new to the whole world of
pottery.

Please e-mail me if you have any comments.

Hello Lynnette,
We have quite a few old manuals on hand, possibly one for your kiln. Give us
a call & ask for Shannon.
Whether the kiln is safe to operate is hard to tell without giving it a
"once over". You may want to check our "service person listings", on our
website, & have someone check it out before you put it to use.

This is the address for Jen-Ken Kilns. They used to be located in
Sarasota, from where I come. They were sold and moved to Lakeland, FL. I
used 2 kilns from Jen-Ken's. I've taught for 30 years and Jen-Ken was
the one we used because they were local. Never had a problem. Have it
checked out.

Chris -

I read your post about old kilns and could not pass up the opportunity to
tell you about an up-coming event at our Arrowsmith Potters Guild in
Parksville,B.C. (Vancouver Island).

Recently, we were given a Revelation Muffle Kiln made in Detroit, Michigan
in the year 1900. It is a little rusty but in remarkably good condition,
complete with the muffles.

We are making a special place in our Gallery for the kiln and we are going
to rechristen it on April 15/2000
