low-fire casting slip?

updated fri 31 mar 00

I'm having trouble locating a recipe for a low fire casting slip; white or
terra cotta. I wonder if there are particular problems with casting with
low fire slips and that is why there is so little information out there?
If anyone has a recipe for a cone 06-03 casting slip recipe I would greatly
appreciate your sharing of it on this list. I'm hoping to doing some
detailed painting with slips and underglazes with bright colors on cast
pieces and that is why I was looking for a lower fire recipe. Also, I've
been enjoying using colored slips on hand built terracotta and would love
to do this with some slip cast pieces but again, haven't been able to
locate a recipe. Also, if anyone has a recipe for a white casting slip that
has a wide firing range, cone 3 to 9 or so, I would love to hear about it.
I'm just starting to work with casting and am experimenting with different
slips.

Thanks!

Lori,
Been a while since I did any mold making or slip casting, but the
following worked.

Low fire recipe (^04-06)
100# batch of slip (10 gals), because that's what fits in my cement
mixer without slopping out....I used a mixture of clays, as follows:
17# SGP
17# PV
17# OM4
50# TALC
+ Soda Ash - 1 oz or 28.35 grams
+ Sodium Silicate 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 fl oz, diluted with like amount of
water
+ Water - 5 to 5-1/2 gals

A simpler casting slip from the "Hands in Clay" book is 50% OM4
(2027.25 grams) and 50% (2027.25 grams)talc. Plus 4.46 gr soda ash
and 18.65 grams sodium silicate and 67 oz of water. That's supposed
to make 1 gallon.
-----------
I also have a white porcelain ^5-7 slip (from the Hands in Clay book)
if you'd like it. Let me know. I've never used a terra cotta casting
slip, but with some dinking around there's no reason you couldn't come
up with something. I'll just bet somebody out there has a recipe....
