making mold from bones

updated sun 2 apr 00

i've got some leg bones from a horse or cow that i want to use to form
molds for some pieces i have in mind. i don't want to destroy the bones in
the process so am thinking of putting several coats of varathane on them,
wrapping clay around them (watching for undercuts around the joint) and
cutting it off carefully when it is leather hard.

is there a better/other way to do this? any particular clues for the
process, etc.?

Joanna,

Paleontologists do this sort of thing all the time. If I wanted to make
models of bones, I'd call the Black Hills Institute, where they do museum
reproductions of fossilized bones. I'm sure you can find such a place closer
to home, but if not, write me at my e-mail address below and I'll give you
their phone number. I can tell you one interesting tid-bit. They use Legos
toys to create the walls for their molds. The versatility of the toys allows
them to make a mold form in exactly the size and shape they need.
