Dear Arnold.
My old rebuilt kiln has elements on the bottom, lined vertically over
the entire floor. When I first fired the kiln, and could only reach
1100, my resident electrician husband checked again all the elements.
The bottom elements and a wall were not heating. Now they all work.
I cannot say specifically that it is the bottom elements that dry the clay
during heating, but I use an eight hour drying program at 80 c. This is
because my studio is small, and I basically stack as soon as I trim. I =
close
the door on wet clay and dry out. I usually set in completely wet
test tiles, because I always need more.
I have fired the kiln this way successfully, with no blowups.

Best regards,
Alisa in Denmark

Dear All:

What do you think of the heating element mounted in
the kiln's brick bottom? I've heard that it's main
advantage is in drying clay during candling.

Thanks,

Arnold Howard
