Dear All,

I am teaching an adult ceramic class here in Cote d'Ivoire, and would
like to give a small demonstration of Raku techniques. Can anyone help
me answer several questions, in hopes the answers will make this
possible?

For one thing I do not have access to some of the types of glazes
available in the U.S. and elsewhere. The glazes available to us are
^04ish, Amoco, or some such thing, and limited to glossies. I'm hoping
this problem in itself won't put the kabash on my plans. And the
feldspars for making ones own glazes just plain are not available in
this part of the world.

Just a thought: I wonder what it would be like using borax and soda
materials? There are problems with solubility of the glaze, but then
again, this is raku. We are not looking for a hotel china type finish.
With this type of glaze we may just get something as ugly as all get
out, but then again. . . . . .

For the demo I would be using what is otherwise a largish test kiln,
individually placing small bowl size pieces within it. Then of course,
removing these to a metal pail, containing carpenter's leavings. The
idea is to simply give our participants a taste of the technique.
