How is marble for a wedging table?

Dorothy,

I have a 24 X 24 slab of marble (from an yucky old table). the unpolished
side is good for wedging if I want to dry the clay a little bit, the
polished side is the easiest clean up ever. and it is easy to change from
stoneware to white ware by hosing it off. (thanks to my wonderful bluebird
de-airing pug mill, I don't wedge an awful lot anymore)

Dorothy,
For my purposes, I consider it the best surface. I couldn't take everything
with me when I moved across country four years ago. One of the things I wish
I had now is the marble slab I was using. It was about 3 x 18 x 24 inches
and just too heavy to carry along. I was using the smooth, but unpolished,
side. No dust, easy to clean, and always looks classy.

Dorothy,
Somewhere I read 25 years ago that marble made a great wedging table. I
tried it and have used marble for that period of time. Marble is absorbtive
and makes wedging easy since the clay doesn't slide and slip and in addition
it is forever durable and you don't have to worry about plaster chipping
which I did for the first couple of years. Believe me I've put seconds
marble on all of my table tops - its wonderful easy to clean and durable;
oddly I don't thing many potters use it - can't say why?

Hello Dorothy, if you've a piece of marble with an 'eggshell' finish, and not
the shiny sort, you should be o.k.
Had to leave mine back in the U.K. and I've been crying ever since. A good
concrete slab will work just as well, but you have to be careful of chipping
it for obvious reasons (lime). Eggshell finish granite would be o.k. too, and
might be easier to get a hold of - via the local monumental mason.
Right now, I use an old 1" thick kiln shelf for a wedging slab. Wetted down
first, so as not to absorb too much water from the clay.
