------------------
Hi Cindy,
I use oxides to brush on color.
I usually brush raw oxide mixed with ball clay. This gives a better =
consistency
to the oxide
for brushing. It does also tone the color down a bit, more muted blue, =
brown,
green, what have
you.

You will need to work out some tests and see what concentrations you need =
for
the effect you
want. You can easily over saturate colbalt for example, and instead of a =
blue,
your result will
be a bubbly black.

I more or less mix up oxides with water and judge by color and consistency.
But, again, just
make some small batches and test them.

You can
Brush the oxides on raw greenware, bisque and glaze.

Brush the oxides on bisqueware and glaze.

Glaze the bisqueware and brush the oxide over the glaze (never tried adding
glycerine to
help the brushing, but as I read it works for glaze, I will try it in the
oxide).

The same oxide wash will look different depending on how you apply it =
(above).
You can
get very sharp to very washy, bleeding effects, depending on application =
method
and
the consistency of the wash.

I more or less brush them this way because I personally the effect of an
inbetween sharp and bleeding
edge of the brush strokes.

Medium consistency with ball clay added.
Brush on bisqueware, dip in glaze. You will lose a little of the oxide =
color in
the glaze
bucket each time you dip, but it has never contaminated the gloss glaze =
enough
to ruin it.
The advantage of this is that when you handle the pots to
get them in the kiln, you do not disturb the oxide brush work. (As you =
could if
you brushed
the oxides over the glaze)

Elizabeth Priddy wrote a whole lot about a Korean method of oxides and
underglazes(?)
that may be on her site or in the archives.

Good luck
Best regards,
Alisa in Denmark

=3E----------------------------Original message----------------------------
=3EI am interested in the use of oxides. Not as colorant in glazes, but
=3Eother ways they are used for interesting effects: dripping on or under
=3Eglazes, brushing on or under glazes. Can't really find anything on
=3Ebooks about this. Anyone with experience care to comment on how they do
=3Ethis, and what the effect is? Thanks=21
