How is a co-op set up with the IRS and how does the
entity handle payroll/employee situations?

ours does all the taxes with a regular
accountannt and sends each artist a statement.
The irs sends the artist a 1099 form
indicating how much in sales was reported
by the accountannt, and then the artist
handles it for himself, collecting all of
his 1099.s and dealing with it.

Actually, the IRS does not send out 1099's, but rather your accountant is
doing this for you. The IRS gets a copy and eventually matches them back
against the returns for each individual. Then they send out notices if
there is no match. Even if you do not receive a 1099, you have a
responsibility to report your income, by the way. You still need to keep
books and records of your income and expenses. If the co-op is your only
source of income for this business, the 1099 should agree to your books.
