I stopped in at Trinity Ceramic Supply in Dallas last
week and picked up a couple of bags of Gerstley borate.
They have lots of it in their warehouse.
John Williams, the owner of Trinity, is a real friend of
potters, and he has not raised the price of Gerstley to
take advantage of the increased demand since it was
announced that production will cease. It's still $27.50
for a 50# bag, 2 for $50. To discourage hoarding, they
have set a limit of 200 pounds per customer.

David,
Thanks for the alert. Our local suppliers here in NC, I'm told, are
doling it out 10 lbs at a time, if they have it at all. I just spoke to a
friend last night who had finally found some in the midwest
somewhere, and happily paid $48 for 50 lbs.

Continental Clay Co in Minneapolis has a huge supply and the price has
stayed the same as before the announced end of Gerstley..

Well, David, I asked my son to go in and pick up a hundred
lbs for me.
He lives in the Dallas area.
They sold him 100 lbs of COLEMANITE at $55.00 per 100 lb.
Told him it was the same thing.
He's not really a potter so he listened to them.

Not.
Trinity Ceramic Supply has been swamped since
I sent this message last week, and asked that I
announce to the Clayart list that they have no more
Gerstley borate for sale.
The original posting was from me, not Trinity. I guess
I didn't realize what a response it would generate, and
I apologize for implying that more was available than
actually was.
Once again, folks, remember that it's really not that
big of a deal to change your glaze recipes to use
other materials when you run out of Gerstley borate.
The reason production was ceased is that there was
not much of a market for it. Industry uses frits in boron
glazes and never liked Gerstley borate because of
the variable composition. They regularly make glazes
that are 80% or more frit.
Potters are an insignificant market to a huge corporation.
