When we were setting up our home studio awhile back, I thought about plaster
as a wedging surface but took an approach that was easier, cheaper and faster
(and works great). I went to the local patio-stone yard and bought a very
smooth concrete square, of the type used in sidewalks. I put it on one of our
work tables (a metal/masonite prefab from Home Depot), put a rubber pad under
it to keep it from walking, and love it as a wedging/work surface. As I
recall, it cost about $6. Several sizes were available.
The only problem is that it'll wear down in 500 or 600 years and will need
to be replaced.
