------------------
I think the request put by Martin Howard relating to glazes which would =
mature
on earthen ware clay in the range cone 02- +2 seems reasonable. Who has ever
explored this range? Does it yield anything which is new and exciting. Were =
I to
contemplate this field, I think I would start with a line blend of a borax =
frit
and the body clay. With a white earthen ware there might be a range from =
clear
gloss to opaque. With a terra cotta things might be a little different with
muted browns, even olive greens if the iron content were high. But perhaps a
more important question might be to ask is why this seems not to have been =
done
and published. Perhaps it is because true earthen ware clays, sometimes =
known as
brick earths have fusion temperatures in that particular region of the heat
spectrum, they may even melt. This is mere speculation on my part and I =
would be
interested to hear if my speculation is invalidated by experiment.

Ivor Lewis. Inquisitive but intending to go up the scale.
