stains in commercial glazes?

At a workshop with Eddie Domingues he added Mason stains and/or oxides to
commercial clear glaze to get both clear and opaque coverage (depends on
%). He used these to paint on top of underglazes. He didn't bother
measuring but simply did a test tile each time he made a new batch.
Quite a range of subtle color variations are possible - great for
painters.
