Hi Lowell,
There was an article on bonsai planters in Clay Times a few months
back. Sorry I can't seem to put my hands on it to tell you the exact
month, but it was last year.

Lowell,
Yes! I took up pottery 10 years ago to compliment and support my bonsai
hobby. 99% of my pottery activity is making bonsai containers for my
personal use although I occasionally sell extras at club meetings.
Please have your student contact me if he/she has specific questions. I
would be willing to discuss this topic further on the list if there is
general interest.
dave, in Olympia where spring has arrived!!

Hi Lowell-
I personally do not make these but my neighbour is the local expert on
bonsai and has made his own pots for the last several years ( he is quite
amazing - has had a couple of wheel lessons and learns a lot from library
books). He pours his after making a prototype ( mostly from slabs ) and
then the mould, and has also jiggered orjollied (again of his own devising)
small pots for a nursery. He makes very large trays for groves and smaller
pots for single trees. He makes ovals and rectangular/square - larger ones
with 2 large holes - about the size of a nickel or a dime - and lovely
carved curved feet. The pots for most trees are unglazed, made of a very
dark brown or black clay, and for flowering trees he will use a simple dark
brown, blue or green glaze - something to harmonize with nature. Don't know
if he has e-mail or not but he is not a member of Clayart.

Hello David,
I am interested in Bonsai, I am a potter and I pot in a tourist centre, The
Japanese Gardens in Cowra, Australia. Here are beautiful gardens built by
the Australians and Japanese, for Peace. In it we also have a Bonsai centre.
There are four potters here, taking it in turns to pot and serve customers,
day by day. So I would be very interested in any instructions on Bonsai
pots. TIA
Jean

I have made a few of these planter's. The guy I made them for wanted a
pot about 6 - 8 inch high with a hole on the bottom (middle) about the
size of a silver dollar. This acts as a water drain. The height, about
ten inches, and the color, 'calm', something that is muted so as not to
take away from the tree. The shape: simple, and fairly straight up with
a simple curved out lip. He liked a pit fired piece that I did well
enough to buy and make a hole in the bottom himself! Simple huh!?? Happy

Just to but in here. Cowra had a prisoner of war camp for Japanese prisoners
in WW II. There was a massacre of prisoners there when they tried an
en-masse exodus. It has been the focus of reconciliation efforts between
Australia and Japan ever since.
Sorry Jean,
Feri.

Hello David, Jean and all.
I would like informing about Bonsai planters.
There is the Takagi Bonsai Museum at Ichigaya, Tokyo, Japan.
It has many Bonsai planter collection.
When you have a time to come to Tokyo.
You should visit there if you want.
You will be amply satisfied with Bonsai and Bonsai planter.
