It is an interesting question. UK artist Anthony Gormley (also called
Gormless by certain people, although he is laughing all the way to the bank)
had South American Native people make hundreds of little ceramic whole
person sculptures in clay. He then crowded them all into a room... Viola! He
had created HIS ART OWN WORK with little credit to all those who helped...

Because he is the own who conceived the idea, he is considered the artist
and it is broadly accepted as being his work...

What interests me, is the fact that this is an ARTIST. SO... different rules
apply?

Janet -
Regarding your comment on the Anthony Gormley piece, it is important to
point out that the work was made by a traditional family of brick-makers,
and that had much to do with the content and meaning of the work. He also
worked with them on the project. And the final product, a gallery with over
10,000 haunting little terracotta figurines, is an extremely powerful work
of art. The fact that he did not make all those pieces by his own hand has
absolutely nothing to do with the intent of the work, as you know. I can
appreciate your reasons for citing this work, but we must consider it in the
right context. The fact that Gormley hired the family of brickmakers to
create the individual components was PART of the finished piece.
Best wishes -
