I am living in Indonesia and have a limited number of materials available. I
want ot do some tests with shino type glazes but have no Neph.sy spodumene
or lithium available.I would also like to test some glazes using dolomite
but it is hard to find. Can I replace it with whiting and magnesium carb . I
am firing in reduction to cone 9/9+ and would welcome any suggestions.

For the Dolomite
45 Magnesium Carbonate 55 Whiting roughly. It is rough, because whiting is
rarely way up there on the purity scale and dolomite only apporximates the
45/55 ratio.
The trouble is that the MaGnesium Carbonate if it is the fluffy precipitated
type will cause lots of crawling. If the Magnesium Carbonate is less that 5%
you probably won't have a problem.
I am no help in substituting for Spodumene unless you have lepidolite,
petalite, or another lithium containing mineral available.

Kathy,
There are other lithium feldspars you could try such as Lepidolite
and Petalite if you happen to have those available. Concerning your
other question, 45% magnesium carb. and 54% whiting would be a good
starting point as a substitution for dolomite.
