Hi, All,,
I just had an electrician to change out all 3 switches in my Skutt 1227.. =
Up
till the last firing before changing them, my firing didn't reach my desired=
=5E6
temp..Electrician said one of my switches was completely burned out and the
others weren't working correctly.. I watched as he tested all 3.. He also
checked the elements.. His deduction was the elements and switches just =
weren't
connecting..I tried a =5E6 firing today.. guess what.. after firing ALL =
Night. it
never reached my =5E6..I have a kiln sitter, which I used..I manually turned=
the
switches myself..low, med, and then high.. When I got up, expecting the kiln=
to
have fired,, it was still on, I then cut off all switches. But, the lights =
were
still on the kiln.. I had to unplug to cut the electricity.. My question is
two fold.. If/ Could/would the dial on the switches not be set correctly..
ie:low was really med or high or vice/versa make that difference? I turned =
them
on high and couldn't hear a loud buzz.. This is all after the firing..OR.. =
If I
use my controller, would it bypass switches if in fact they are not set
correctly..Help=21=21=21 I hope this is clear.. Will appreciate any =
opinions.. Thanks
for those taking the time to read my long post...Carolyn

Carolyn - you asked if the dial on your swiches could be reversed - good
question! In some kilns the switch unit is indeed positioned "up-side-down"
in relation to others. However - it is easy to figure out where the Low and
High positions on your switch are located: Turn the knob on the switch -
you will find that there are only three "locking" positions - all near each
other. These are the Low, Off, and High positions. The Off position is
centered between the Low position (which is located counter clockwise to
Off) and the high position (clockwise to off). The Medium (non-locking)
positions are between the Low and High locking positions. Now look at the
dial on the outside of your kiln - if the Off position is on the top of the
dial, install the switch so that the three (side-by-side) prongs on the back
are line up along the bottom edge (This edge is confusingly imprinted with
the word "top" - but ignore that). Conversely, if the Off position is at
the bottom of your kiln dial, install the switch so that the three
(side-by-side) prongs on the back are line up along the upper edge). Hope
this isn't too confusing. PS - You can install (or re-install as the case
may be) these switches yourself quite easily - in just a few minutes.
Contact me off-list if you'd like step by step instructions. One of these
days I'm going to publish a "Girl's Guide to Kiln Repair" (sorry fellas) - a
lot of women seem interested.

If you buy the switch from the kiln mfg it will match the dial if you buy
from an appliance dealer they come as standard or reverse. Standard being
the most common and ccw movement will start at low. I would pay attention
to the top marking on the switch and mount it as it says. The dials can also
be bought as reverse or standard.
