Hello,
I am looking for a sand type that when mixed with cement will make it black
cement.
I do not want to use pigments.
Does anyone know what sand can be used and where to find it ?
Thanks,
Sincerely,
Neta

Neta,
You can use black volcanic sand. I don't know where you'll get it unless you
happen to live near a volcanic island, but maybe your building supply store
will be able to help you. I don't think using this sand will make your
cement black, but you can give it a try.

For what its worth. I have heard and seen on television, that there is black
sand on one of the Hawaiin Islands. Dont remember which one is was. But it
might be a place to start searching. Good hunting.

I know of a couple of beaches in New Zealand where the sand is black... The
giant Rio Tinto wanted the "mineral rights" but were refused...
However, I do not believe black sand will be the answer unless it is
extremely fine. The cement itself needs to be stained, otherwise the liquid
that gathers on the surface will stay grey and spoil the effect of any black
in the "body". Unless this is for a cast piece?
Be careful to check the mineral content of any black sand you are offered...
It could have high concentrates of stuff like iron which would affect the
strength of the cement. Or even effect the ability to set.
Is there a reason not to use stains?

Hi,
It is my understanding that cement can be dyed any color you want. I would
contact a masonry contractor or two out of the yellow pages to find out what
to add for this effect.

hello clayarters,
Back in 1970, ro so, a classmate wanted to make some black concrete, so
she went to the supplier and they sold her some special stain in a nice
cardboard tube container. I think she paid about $5 or $6 for about one
pound (454 gm). When she looked at it the label said Black Iron Oxide.
She said I could have gotten that for free in the glaze room! Try Black
iron oxide to color the cement or premix.

I think you might add mason stains for coloring cement.
Makes sense to me.
