I've never read or heard about the process of joining broken pottery
pieces with gold or silver. Is this process described anywhere? Dan

There is an Australian potter called Petrus Spronk who did a lot of this =
some
years ago. Used to break his pots and repair them with gold leaf along the
fracture. But he never revealed his technique. However, an uneducated guess
makes me think that he may have used the technique confectioners use to coat
sugar balls with silver to make Silver Dragees.

I think the idea of using Silver Solder may have some problems. It is a high
temperature process. Silver solders melt in the 650-750 Celsius range. They =
also
contain Cadmium which volatilises if they are over heated.

This technique is known as " Kintsugi" or " kintsukuroi" in Japan.
I was hoping someone would answer to Dan's post.

You may have seen many teabowls or pots mended with gold in the Japanese
pottery books.
The broken pats are connected with lacquer liquid and the gold powder
is applied to hide the darkened surface.

This is done by specialist of antique pottery, however,
you can buy a kit in Japan. It might be rather a dificult process if
you don't understand the nature of lacquer liquid.

Tommorow I am going to the Smithsonian Craft show
hoping to find a nice pot or two.
