Hi Gail!
As a long-time user of lepidolite-based glazes, I've been informed that this
ingredient is no longer available. Where does one acquire Lepidolite these
days?
Indeed, lepidolite is a florine-based ingredient, but it's cratering effect
is somewhat less blatent than cryolite, also a florine substance. In my
experience, lepidolite helps soften the gloss of a glaze, creating a "stony"
appearance to the glaze.
As a substitute for lepidolite, you might consider using spodumine. There's
no florine in spodumine, but the lithium content is about the same as in
lepidolite.
Happy glazing!
