combo wood/gas kiln ~ small woodburning kiln

The Fastfire kiln would be a good choice for both
Lori and John Boalick.
It's fast and easy to build, and could be dismantled
and moved next year.
Just add burner ports on the side walls, above the
fireboxes, and it can be fired with gas or wood.
Note: It can be fired with gas OR wood. This design
is not for starting a firing with gas and then switching
to wood. Either the burner ports or the fireboxes need
to be blocked off when not being used.

Plans are in Fredrick Olsen's book, "The Kiln Book".

Subject: combo wood/gas kiln

| ----------------------------Original message----------------------------
| I overheard someone talking about their combination wood/gas kiln at a
| conference this weekend and was wondering if anyone had any information
they
| could share. I'm looking to build a small kiln (probably under 24
cu.ft.),
| but have no idea how to build a combination kiln. She supposedly fires
wood
| during the summer and propane during the Wisconsin winter, which is where
I
| live also. If anyone has any information, plans, etc. they would be
willing
| to share, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance. Lori

Subject: ANY PLANS FOR A SMALL WOOD BURNING KILN?

| ----------------------------Original message----------------------------
| Does anyone have plans or know where to get some for a small inexpesive
| wood burning kiln? I am going to be staying where I am at for about a year
| and don't want to invest too much into one right now.

There is an interesting article in The June/July/August 1996 issue of
CM by David Swanson on a small wood kiln built by Graham Sheehan. It
is a 30 cu. ft. and he says it can reach cone 10 in 13 hr. and 45
min. Sounds ideal .

I can attest to the fact that Graham Sheehan's wood kiln works - he built
one for me exactly like his own. This kiln is so efficient that if you do
not pay close attention it will reach cone 10 faster than 10 hours. We burn
red cedar and get lots of ash and color in each firing. As to efficiency,
you could fire it in a "downtown" situation and there is so little smoke
that no one would know it was firing.

Check it out. You can contact Graham at sunstone@ultranet.ca
