I think that one can safely get through about one tray of
sllides. If you want to show TWO trays of slides, then
sit them side by side and run two slides at once. The
number of slides is not so important as the amount of TIME
it takes. Forty-five minutes to an hour is about the
maximum I like to make people sit through. After that,
they fidget - and so do I. So set up what you think you'll
need, run through them once or twice saying whatever you
are likely to say at the presentation. Check your time,
and consider that there may be questions or remarks as
you go along, and add a bit to your time estimate. The
group will stay interested about as long as YOU would
stay interested in the same circumstance. One of the
problems in such presentations is that people sometimes
show slide after slide that are essentially the same -so
variety is a help.

Have a good time. Come prepared for heat. It's been summer
a long time here.

Eleanora,
I can sit through about 20 minutes of slides before I get so charged up and
inspired that I can't sit any longer! I've never given a slide show before,
so my comment relate as a viewer only.
Good luck!

Well I'm flying down to Texas next weekend to give a plaster-casting
workshop and one of the things is doing a slide show. I'm curious as to
what peoples' experiences are about how many slides make a good-sized
presentation. I have zillions of good slides and I don't want to over-do
it. Any tips from people who do this regularly will be very welcome.

I'll let you all know how it goes.

Hi Eleanora,

As a participant (attendee, not presentor) in many workshops, I can give you
my personal opinion. A workshop discussion/slide presentation of more than
30 minutes (with the lights off or low) is probably too much - no matter how
good the slides are. If you need to go longer, consider breaking things
into two sessions with some activity between. Clearly it depends a lot on
your presentation style (how much time you spend on each slide, how many
stories you tell and illustrate with the slides, etc.), but if you're just
zipping through slides with minimal commentary, probably 6 slides a minute
is about the maximum. That's 180 slides! I've never seen anyone do that!

At this year's Functional Ceramics Workshop, Andrea Gill showed two nearly
full trays (~160 slides) in a two-screen presentation that went for +30
minutes. She gave a very interesting talk (stories, jokes, etc.), but toward
the end folks were getting antsy - and she does this for a living.

Knock 'em dead.

Bob
