sharpening tools: bench grinders caution

One of the things that causes a grinding wheel to explode is grinding a
material that the wheel is not designed for such as aluminum or other low
melting metals. The friction melts the aluminum and travels into the wheel
cools and expands, this causes the small fractures. This is the eventual
cause of the exploding wheel. Never grind aluminum !!!!!!!
Keep a container of water to cool any tool you are sharpening. As long as
don't forse your tool against the wheel it won't heat too much. Cool it in
water once every minute or so to be sure.
I retired Cabinetmaking and Furniture Design after 27 years to start my new

Sorry to be contrary, but for the sake of correct information I offer this.
I have been welding and fabricating metals for over thirty years, and I have
never heard the above. It is true that it requires a light touch to grind
aluminum, and that it can clog the surface of the wheel badly if too much
pressure is applied. But that aluminum will not expand when it cools, it
will shrink, so I cannot see how it would cause problems. But I have used
bench grinders and angle grinders on aluminum hundreds of times over the
decades. When the wheel does get a bit clogged, a diamond dresser or star
wheel dresser, or even a chunk of silicon carbide kiln shelf will clean it
out in a hurry.
Best wishes -

We use a file to sharpen our tools. There are metal shelves outside the
door of the workshop and the top shelf has a ledge to act as a stop for the
cutting tool. The tools are sharpened on the inside edge, instead of the
outside edge, so they'd be more difficult to sharpen on a bench grinder.
It is more important to keep these tools sharp compared to the tools I used
in the USA and you can't trim as soft as I am used to.
