Two traditional Zapotec potters from Oaxaca, Mexico will be in
Arizona this May demonstrating their handbuilding ways and selling some fine
pots. They will be in Flagstaff at the Festival of Hispanic Arts and Crafts
with the Museum of Northern Arizona May 27-28. The following weekend (June
2-4) they will be taking part in a showing of Oaxacan pottery in the nearby
town of Jerome and will be firing their work using their traditional tumble
stack firing method on Sunday the 4th.
I will be there with the potters translating and helping to answer
questions. I will also be presenting a slide show lecture each weekend about
the pottery of southern Mexico.
This is the first time these potters have ever travelled outside of
their country and this has been made possible by the generous sponsership if
Dean Bubolo of Jerome, Az. I invite all of you to come and visit us on one
of these weekends. If you look on your maps you'll note that Arizona is
much closer than Oaxaca. Don't miss this opportunity to meet these wonderful
potters.
Please e-mail me with any questions,
Eric Mindling
p.s. to Arizona area potters/organizations- we have two open days in the
schedule (May 31 and June 1st). We may decide to spend them playing in the
creek, but if you have some interest or idea for this time with these
potters, please be in touch with me.
