cone 6 near-midnight blue?

updated fri 26 may 00

David Malicky on fri 12 may 00

I'm looking for a Cone 6 Blue formula that is...
- dark but not too close to black
- semi-gloss or glossy
- medium to low expansion
- food safe
- does not crawl (i have a few of these already!)
- has less than 15% Gerstley (so not too goopy)

Thanks,

Ian and David...I have also found the Midnight Blue ^6 glaze a beautiful reliable
predictable one. When I tested it with a three day vinigar soak there was no
leaching, but I have not sent it away...I believe it appeared in Pottery Making
magazine a while ago. Lori in new Port Richey Fl...with the AC on again for the
summer!

David

No one seems to have answered you on the list, so I am sending this that I
got from clayart some time ago. I have used it at cone 6 with great
success. Best fairly thick.

Midnight blue

whiting 17
ball clay 8
kaolin 9
flint 22
potash feldspar 44

add: cobalt oxide 5% ( I use carbonate 10% )

no gerstley
doesn't run or craze for me
lovely deep blue - add more cobalt if you need to
glossy
can't speak to the food safe with the cobalt. I don't know if anyone has
tested it.

Best of luck!

Ian

Hi Ian,

This is interesting - it's really at least a cone 10 glaze without the
cobalt because it has lots of alumina and silica. The cobalt - way over any
limits recommended for food by the way - is acting as a flux.

This would be an excellent glaze to have tested at Alfred - way over in
limits but it just might be food safe because of it.

Anybody want to be a hero?
