Hi Gallaghers: I love Andy Goldsworthy also. I think it is the rock thing. So
related to the earthiness of clay.

My list:

my grandfather, who had the=20
wonderful given name: Dewey Fitzhugh
who spent countless hours with me as=20
a child pointing out the wonders of
the world around me, such as
the beautiful the muscadine grapes
growing wild in the woods behind his
house and the smell of wild cherry=20
trees and how to plant lima beans
and a lifetime of respect for the
animal kingdom

the little pots of clay made by=20
potter wasps
=20
the dry hot smell of the earth when
not one more drop of moisture can
be pulled from it
and then in contrast the smell
of impending rain

Meditation from Thais by Massenet
Doodle art
Tlinget artifacts
the human form
Rodin(see above)
Georgia O'Keefe
Van Gogh
My grandmother's quilts
St. Paul de Vence, France
The cathedrals in St. Paul de Vence
and Nice, France
Lord Byron
Carl Sandburg
Walt Whitman

As you can see I am easily influenced
just kidding,=20

as a potter the single most important
influence in my life came from losing=20
myself in a tobacco fifth middle (for those
not familiar with that term, lets just
say the rows in a plowed field)
belly down, building little villages from the
clods of dirt, baked hard by the sun. I
"discovered" dirt and mud and clay and
my imagination then.

In no particular order:

being alone in a small boat on big water

the various curves of our bodies

things found under the bark of trees, and
the patterns revealed as wood decays

the stars
fire
other sparkly things

the interplay of light and shadow

ancient clay figures and vessels

the shapes that appear in stone as it's carved

harp music playing while I throw

memories of my parents and their stories

the rituals of everyday life, and of the seasons
