tiles on concrete/"cinder" block walls

Would anyone care to take a stab at posting their
fave way to adhere tiles to concrete block walls?
I am thinking: holes in tiles, masonry bit,
bolt the things in. Incorporate the
holes into the tile design. Am I crazy?

Thanks, Clayart

Dear Diane,

The concrete surface should be free of paint and grime and it should be
prepared with a scrubbing of muriatic acid which is a somewhat hazardous task
as the gloves should be acid resistant and a proper Osha MASK WOULD BEE A
MUST.The brush needs to have acid resistant bristles and any vegetation
affected by runoff will be killed so consider permanent landscaping and
trees. After this clleaning is accomplished use an adhesive reccommended by
the American tile council for that particular application and the firing
range and porosity of your particular clay and the climate where this mural
will exist. There are such frequent developments in these adhesives and grouts
that getting the latest one is best rather than take casual suggestions as a
wall in a public area could carry financial liability should it fail .
These are a start.I would not bother with bolting as the proper adhesives
will do the job as many are in existance on buildings of all sorts around the
globe.

Diane,
Assuming the concrete block wall was,or will be, built as neatly
as possible then your local hardware or tile store will have adhesive that
will most certainly stick the tiles on.If the tiles are made by yourself and
you did not score the back of them to give the adhesive something to stick
to then you can apply the adhesive to the back of each tile and using the
piece of notched plastic draw this through the adhesive,a comb with wide
spaced teeth will also do,and leave this to dry hard, you now have a key to
which the adhesive will stick. You now apply the adhesive to the wall with a
trowel which has one edge notched and again draw the notched edge through
the adhesive and place your tiles. Do NOT cover too much of the wall at one
time, maybe a couple of square feet, as a block wall will dry out the
adhesive very fast. I have no experience of cinder block so cannot advise
you.

Diane,
It will partly depend on if the block walls currently have a
coating on them, paint, sealer, etc. If the walls are new or
without a coating, you can set the tile directly on the wall
using a multipurpose thinset. Or if you need the surface to
be smoother, no joints, etc, you can use backerboard, Durock,
Wonderboard, which you will thinset and masonry screw to the
wall. Then set your tile on that.
You can email me off list if you have any specific questions
about the above statements. Also specifics about the tile
such as size, weight, thickness, and is it interior or
exterior installation, could have an effect on the best course
of installation.

If this is an outdoor project, moisture getting under the tiles will be a
problem no matter how you adhere them. Use grout with epoxy in it....should
be water proof. Ask a local tile professional installer, or better
yet....get in touch with Peter King in Pensacola, FL. He might have the
info in his new book. If you can reach him, he is most willing to help. I
took his workshop and it was a blast ! Merrie
