Has anyone tried tiles directly on formica? I'd love to tile my old
formica kitchen counter........what kind of prepping is essential to make
the thinset or adhesive adhere?
I'm uninspired after two years of home remodeling projects and want a
quick and easy way to finish the job.

You have to first roughen up the surface before adhering tile to formica.
Coarse sanding will do for a countertop.

It is posible to adhere to plastic laminate if the surface is prepared
first. The reason Plastic laminate (formica is a brand name)works so well
in kitchens and baths is that not much sticks to it and it's water
resistant.
The best way is to scratch the surface with coarse sand paper like 40 to
80 grit range, If it is a large surface a belt sander would be required.
This will provide enough tooth allow silicone adhesive to grip. Then use a
silicone prepared grout to prevent water from getting down under the tiles
in the future. I do not believe thinset would grip. As you can see it is a
no turning back process but is less work than removing the counters and
starting over. It would also be posible to screw down the cement board 1/4
or 1/2" thick directly over the laminate and use the thinset method. Good
luck!
