Dave Glenn, Minnesota Crafts Council on thu 1 jun 00
Just wanted to remind folks about the upcoming Svend Bayer Kiln
Building
workshop at Banner Oak Pottery in New London, MN June, 2 - 11. There
are a few spots left open in both the weekend only options June 2 - 4,
and June 9 - 11, along with a few full workshop options as well.
Minnesota Crafts Council members can attend a weekend workshop for
$75,
non members $100; and the full 10 day workshop is only $175 for
members
and $210 for non members. All participants are encouraged to bring
work
to fire in the kiln (the focus for the second weekend workshop).
Items
should be made with clay that will fire to Cone 11.
This is a great opportunity to learn kiln building from a master. The
kiln will be 22' to 26' long, catenary arch shaped. Chambers will be
created with large planters/saggars to create separate firing areas
within the kiln. Svend believes with the elimination of interior
walls
the kiln should have a longer life with less repairs.
Craig Edwards, owner of Banner Oak Pottery, is excited to make this
kiln
facility available to potters around the region. With this facility
in
place their will be regular community style firings taking place year
round. Craig's generosity in supplying the land, kiln shed and
materials for the kiln are making this project possible.
A grant from the Southwest Minnesota Arts & Humanities Council (SMAHC)
a
part of the regional arts council system in Minneosta has allowed a
reduction in fees to participants.
