surging brent wheels

Don't know about the possibility of the kiln controller affecting the wheel,
but in my experience, surging on Brent wheels is sometimes caused by poorly
crimped wire terminals within the wheel's electronic control box. They must
have had some real lightweights on the crimping tool for a while, because I
have run into this problem a number of times. I really do like the Brent
wheel, and consider it to be the workhorse for academic studios. But if you
are having trouble with such surging, be sure to check the terminals in the
control box. Just get a crimping tool from Radio shack or an auto supply
store, and remove the spade terminals one-by-one and re-crimp the sleeve
where the wire is inserted into the terminal. You might be amazed.
Good luck -

Vince's comment about poor terminal crimping on Brent controllers is
right on. I've run into the same problem with Pacifica controllers as
well. Another problem is corrosion of the "spade" portion of the
connection - a little 220 grit sandpaper and elbow grease will fix this.
I've got to the point where my trouble shooting procedure STARTS with
checking the connectors, then moves on to other possibilities.

I don't know if I read all the messages but it seems that the kiln is on
when the surging happens. This may sound lame but does the surge happen
when the power kicks on in the kiln ? I have a Brent and worked in a shop
that had an electrical service that was just adequate .The soak cycle for
the crystals drove me mad;speed up ,slow down .
alohaz Tim.
PS. I' real new to this , don't even know if this will get through .

Dear Tim

The surging you speak of is not uncommon. Although I don't use an
electric wheel, I have notice that my kiln vent (homemade) surges as well
when the controller is cycling. My controller was manufactured by Canadian
Instrumentation and they wre one of the first to manufacture this device. It
has not been an issue for me, but i just though to share this not uncommon
experience with you.

Sincerely, Donald Burroughs
