THis site has links to photomicrographs of several clays.

I have a book somewhere with the photomicrographic
comparison of compressed and uncompressed clay. Don't
know where in the house at the moment, nor its title.

Try really good spiral wedging, making sure you don't
re-incorporate air into the lump of clay, and compare
that with throwing straight from the bag.

Even though coning on the wheel is also supposed to
align the clay, I'm not sure I don't prefer the spiral
wedging for good tensile strength of the clay.

I saw Bruce Cochrane demonstrate throwing thick slabs
then stretching them to thin them by the slap and drag
method. He preferred it to slab rolled clay especially
for altered thrown pots lids or bases.
