Greetings all,

I went to the hardware store to get some stainless steel u-bolts and almost
fainted when the smallest ones I saw were $2.69 each. I see in some of the
drawings in the latest book I bought (Diana Pancioli) and Richard Burkett's
article in PMI, what looks like a flat piece of metal that is bent at a 90
degree angle so it can be attached with screws to the die. Can anyone tell me
where to get this metal, does it need to be stainless steel to prevent
rusting, what thickness to use and any ideas on how to prepare the metal,
like cutting, bending, etc.? Also, can I use brass bolts to attach the holder
or only stainless steel?

Scored a 2'x2' very well used white, cutting polysomething board at a garage
sale and all ready to start cutting out dies. This is going to be so much fun.

Lynne,
Stainless steel, brass - forget it.
Buy 3" zinc coated steel U-bolts for about a dollar each.
Assuming that you will use your dies in a hand extruder
for only a few hours at a time, and only a few days a
month, zinc plated steel won't rust for decades.
Heck, even if there is a little rust, it wouldn't be enough
to noticeably contaminate even white clay.
I've found 1/4" diameter U-bolts to be too weak. Go
for 5/16" diameter.
