We used to heat carved soapstone objects to change thier color. Dull red heat is the temperature I remember.
I have glaze some slate in the past. I am told that sometimes it blows up. It didn't for me. Lowfire.
I have some granite I heated to dull read heat. It was black but is now red on the outside.
