Dear Clayarters
I have just come back from a road trip along the Cal. Coast. I found
little or no Raku or pit fired art. Is there a reason for this? I looked
in galleries from San Diego to Ventura county ,all around the beach
areas. There was lots of high fire. Any one have some insight on this?

clay it's not a diversion, it's obsession.

s. cal american ceramic society. they have an annual aug pit fire on
catalina and usually one locally around halloween.

I suggest that you contact Hal Reiger from Rough & Ready, CA. He is a renown
authority on this subject and it an author on RAKU.

A teacher here in Belleville Ontario told me just this week that the
galleries aren't buying raku. I guess she may know something about it,
as her husband, now a glassblower, was a raku potter for many years.

On the other hand, there is a raku co-operative of 6 women in Toronto.
The group is called the "Balls of Fire". They're good potters and good
artists in clay, I think. They were assisting Harold Takayesu at the
all day raku workshop held last Friday as part of the preamble to the
Fusion Conference of which I wrote earlier.

2 of Bruce Cochrane's, 2 by Lana Wilson. An amazing blue teapot (now
just enjoy looking at it... not funtional, not "strokable", but really
grand all the same.

As for Bruce's work, it was amazing to watch him throu his large pieces,
alter them, finish them (well, obviously not the glazing). The last pot
I made here once I came back home had a nice wide lip that I'm sure was
influenced by Rob's nesting bowls' lips.

Nancy,

My work is not in galleries, but I can tell you that I have not done any raku
since I moved to southern CA. I sure do miss it. I live in LA county and with
all the air polution restrictions and laws, I am afraid that I'd get a fine
or ??? Maybe I'm just paranoid. I am eager to hear the experience of other
folks in the area.
