Hi,
I have trouble getting helpful hands to leave test pieces in the dishwasher.
Would it be possible to have a back-up test where I would make a strong
solution of dishwasher soap and water and let that sit in the bowl glazed
with the glaze being tested, just like we do with the vinegar test?
Thanks, Carol

Hi Carol,
Yes probably. Several of us have suggested the dishwasher test just
because it seemed simple and something most everyone could do. Part of
the value of the dishwasher test though is that it is real life including
the exposure to hot soapy dishwasher water. You might try saving some of
your dishwasher water that is full of soap. Then put it in your cup,
heat it to dishwasher water temperature (160 +- deg F) in your microwave,
let it cool to room temperature, then repeat several (30??) times. That
would probably give you something approaching the dishwasher test. There
is nothing highly scientific about the test. It is just that I have
found that if a glaze is going to fail it usually becomes evident fairly
quickly. Even in the vinegar test, most of the glazes that fail begin to
show some visible sign of failure within the first few hours.
