skutt's new kiln?

updated sun 11 jun 00

Allright, for the last two months Skutt has had an advertisement on the back
page of Ceramics Monthly telling me that some things are worth waiting for.
Well, I'm tired of waiting. Does anyone have a clue as to what they will
be offering? From the looks of the ad it is an oval kiln. Anybody have any
ideas?

I was curious as well and asked my (almost) local clay dealer when I stopped
buy to purchase a few items (and left with - well, we don't need to go into
that, do we?). It is an oval kiln. Apparently, Skutt has been working on
perfecting the lid. Tried all sorts of things and finally succeeded. Don't
know anything more than that (this was as of 2 months ago).

At NCECA they had an oval. It was built to Skutt standards. They have been holding
off untill they could acheive an even heating kiln with no floor elelment and a
good design for a large oval lid.
Unlike thier other kilns they are using a fiber lid, vacumn formed, and an
insulating insert that goes between the bottom shelf and the floor. I am anti
fiber, but the module used for the lid and floor looked like they would be
durable. I suspect that they will be.
Although I have no monetary relationship to Skutt, I have known them for years,
and they have consistently held off producing products until the quality was
superior. Perhaps this ad is about something different, I don't know, but I bet
is good.

Tim..just a wild guess... a SWAG.... but could Skutt be coming out with a
oxidaton/reduction electric/burner kiln?.. Just a thought.. The new coatings
would certainly make that possible.. Jim in Dallas..

It is possible that this is what Skutt is doing, but I doubt it. Skutt has
experimented with ITC products and is not a big fan of othem based on
conversations I had with him. I hope he is coming out with a reduction kiln, but I
don't see that in the tea leaves either.
