Dear Di,
IMHO I think "top" means with the naked eye. I use a red ink pad and a
new pencil eraser to stamp a red dot in the lower left of the slide.
This shows up when they are loaded in the tray.

After hearing of a friend's disaster, I keep
all my original slides in a fireproof box.
The duplicates are filed by date of work in a
slide-storage box.
