pacifica & squeaking

To Iowa Harry: Then how do you stop the squeaking if you don't use
lubricant?. You said the squeaking is because the belt is loose and
slipping . The Pacifica belts are four continuous plastic clear belts
that stretch to be put on. If they stretched and become loose which
causes the squeaking, would you need to replace them? My belts have had
only four months of use and I have already replaced one because it
snapped. Could they get loose in such a short time?

Thanks
Rachael

Hi Rachael,

All the belt drives I have ever seen had some sort of adjustment to maintain
tension on the belt/belts. Springs or bolts to hold the motor in place after
tension has been put on the belt. A multiple belt arrangement has one more
quirk, if one or more belt goes bad and must be replaced, you are generally
better off replacing all. The reason for this is to get a matched set. There
will be minor differences between belts and a large difference between new
and used belts. If you have a set of four, one breaks and you put a new one
on, the newest belt is the shortest and taking all the load and the other
three may be the cause for the squeeking as they are not properly tensioned.
I am not saying you should go and buy all new belts. First you should
inspect how the belt tension is adjusted and see if you can tighten it up a
bit. From what I have heard, many people are having the same problem. Do
these units just need to be adjusted? If it is a spring tension system,
maybe the spring is not strong enough.

Good luck and make sure you have the unit unplugged before you go poking
around inside, watch your fingers.

Harry
