fiber kiln buttons?

Hi all,

I'm getting ready to build a fiber raku kiln & I have a question about the
buttons. I've seen pictures of them with a raised area on one side with
the hole for the wire, but a friend said that he thought the raised area
would stress the fiber liner.

Any thoughts/experience on this?

Hello Valice!
This is the way I made them and worked good :From a Raku claybody, I shaped
with a help of a cup circles. Cut them and made two holes.Fire to ^6 (can be
higher). My raku kiln is a barrel. I put one inside and one outside and
connected with chrom nickel wire

The raised area protects the wire from the heat. The fiber will be fine,
remember no matter what you do, the buttons will be putting stress on the
fiber, that is what it is supposed to do, otherwise, the fiber would fall.

Best of Luck!

Hi, Valice,
I am building two new raku kilns and thought about switching button
types. I have used buttons with two holes but on out high fire door
after 15 years or so some have cracked. On the raku kiln door
a few have cracked as well (after 10 years) and needed replacing. Easy
to do as they are from the raku clay. I have thought the buttons with
the raised backs would not tend to crack. Thought I'd try them. An
alternative might be to use ITC on the buttons. I don't think stress on
the fiber is a problem. I never noticed it stressing fiber in my
previous raku kilns. The fiber will shrink a little bit so allow for
that when laying out your seams.

Ababi, and Valice....I'm sure this shape of button is fine for raku, but I
made the mistake of using these in my gas kiln. Cone 10 was too much for
the exposed wire, and it melted and gave way. I don't know at what point
between cone 6 and cone 10 was too hot. Anyway, I am getting ready to
make buttons shaped sort of like golf tees, with holes in the tip for the
wire. That way the wire will be somewhat insulated. I plan to use
fireclay. If anyone has a better plan, please comment.

When I make "buttons" for fiber kilns, I make them with a
small loop on the back so that the wire is BEHIND the button
when it is wired on. This works very well, and the
buttons seem to last longer- so does the wire. If there
is any "stress" to the fiber, I have not noted it. What
stress could there be, anyway? The fiber will merely be
compressed an infinitesimal amount more.

the best way I have seen to wire up a fiber kiln is to use ceramic three
point stilts, the kind that does not have nicrome wire in them, you just run
a loop of wire over the stilt and then through the fiber.

To the Brinks:

You likely used nichrome wire, whereas the C10 specs call for
Kanthal A1 wire, generally used for elements going to C10+.
Several authors, including Brodie and Colson, cite different kinds
of buttons. Yet, I am intrigued by kiln-maker Harold Takayesu's solution
(he is local here): for his snall portable raku kiln (front-loader), he
makes a series of flat spirals of wire with a tail, the spiral is approx.
5 cm across, and it will hold the blanket in place when the tail is
attached to a hold-down (button, what-have-you) on the kiln's coldface.

Having used porcelain kiln buttons with Kanthal A-1, fired to Cone 5 with
1/2 hour reduction at the end, I have had problems with burning up the
Kanthal wire after many firings. My buttons were of the two hole type, with
wire on the hotface. For this usage, I think I'd prefer a button with a
loop on the back, so that the wire doesn't have to stand up to direct reduction.

Hi Valice,

Once I saw a raku kiln done with heart shaped buttons so when you opened it
yopu saw all these glowing hearts......was on the beach near San Jose a
beach firing festival of some kind when I was at SJSU......I guess being on
halucinogens helped with the effects......

Best, Eleanora........only took me 3 months to make this reply......
