Ivor:
No mozzies yet, been far too wet, and cool.
As for the nature of salt kiln effluent.... if gasfired
with excess air, the kiln will exhaust little or near-zero HCl or Cl2, and
any oxychloro compounds would not be stable at those high temps. But, and
this is not usually considered, many clays contain fluorides and sulfates,
and these produce acidic effluents long before the kiln is dosed with
salt. So any metal near the kiln would be affected by these, as well as by
the salt particles later carried up the flue. A dilute salt solution is
murder on standard steels... just ask people who regularly experience
seaspray.
mel may worry about anti-salt kiln regs, and he may be right,
since in some jurisdictions, it soon may happen that all kilns will (out
of mistaken fear) be required to "wash" the effluent before it is released
to the atmosphere. Thus, no more salting because the cost of effluent
treating would be too high.
