Dear Anne Novak
If your soda ash wash is applied to your clay sculptures it will melt in =
situ and react with the clay without changing into a vapour or a gas.
There is a reference to this in Durrant, General and Inorganic =
Chemistry. Sodium Carbonate rapidly decomposes when brought to red heat =
in contact with porcelain.
Some Ball Clays give a superb orange peel which has a bright orange =
colour when fired in a salt glazing kiln in the traditional fashion. =
Perhaps he was trying to emulate this effect.
Regards,
Ivor Lewis.
