Dear Tom,
Your objection to my reply regarding soda ash came from the Potters
complete book of clay and glazes. I shall quote James Chappell p.423
Soda Ash. (Na2CO3)(m.p.887-932F/475-500C) "This compound is a very
active flux for low-temperature glazes, but due to its highly soluble
nature it is generally used in frit form to prevent recrystallization in
the glaze solution. Glazes which use raw soda ash should be well ground and
used immediately or dry ground and only the amount needed mixed with
water..." He may be wrong.
The question Alisa posed was that the remaining batch she had mixed did
not behave the same as when she first mixed it. It was kept in a closed
container. I suggested that you might have an answer to that.
Are you aware that any mail sent to your address gets rejected? Thanks for
trying to keep me straight. Mia in ABQ

Mia,
I think it is two separate issues. Al of what you say
applies when soda ash is used in a glaze.
I think though that Alisa was wanting to use soda ash as a
wash, in which case it is not the same issue. If you
dissolve soda ash into warm or hot water until you have a
100% solution (one in which the water is fully saturated
with soda ash) then using some of the solution and keeping
the rest in an airtight container should work unless there
is some other factor involved.
