I did a reduction firing in my little Aim Electric Cone 10 kiln last week and
started reduction around 1550. The red was red, Malcolm Davis red shino on
porcelain was a lovely light peach with almost a hint of carbon trapping on
the edge.
I had fired with Nils's burner before but I couldn't get the firing right.
This time I let the flame be an open flame instead of just a low yellow
flame. My oxyprobe never gave a hard reduction reading. Most of the time it
was reading in the 4 range, but I was very pleased with these test tiles. I'm
very much looking forward to buying a small (7-10 cu. ft) combo kiln down
the line. This is really working.
By the way - I've done about 4 reduction firings in that little test kiln
with no ITC coatings, except ITC 100 on the floor, and everything is fine so
far. I just make sure I do an oxidation firing or two in between. So far, so
good.

June

Hi, June. Sounds like your kiln is doing well. We did not
use the oxyprobe on the little kiln at Hay Creek, because
it was in use elsewhere, or someone banged it up, or - dunno.
We just fired by eye & cone. Reduction was superb, including
great carbon trapping & reds.
The reason we coated the coils with ITC 213 was to protect
them from damage from the reduction part of the firing - don't
know how much the reduction shortens coil life, maybe Nils
knows. In any case, it struck me that such kilns would be
a great advantage to those in urban situations who'd like to
do at least occasional reduction firings, to whatever cone.
Glad to hear that it's working thus far for you.
regards
