one thing for sure, metal-bestos is not rated for kiln
work. it is a stack designed for woodstoves.

i have burned up several metal-bestos stacks.

a flu liner stack will keep the heat in very nicely.
it is rated for kiln work...remember you are putting
heat at about 2,000 F. up that stack.

i am a very strong advocate of flu liners. i use them
outdoors at the farm...and the stacks last a long time...as
nils has said, we have more trouble with rust than heat.

we get ours from `fire brick supply` in st.paul.
as nils would also say, `ask for donna`.

our stacks at the farm are sprayed inside with itc 100.
full length...i have not tried the 213 on a metal stack yet...
and remember, bricks make good stacks.

as to stealing...i always say `i was heavily influenced by`...
i have never stolen anything, just influenced by...hmmm.

derivative...what a concept.
go to any show in america....look for don rietz copies,
look for the half donut ears on pots as to val cushing...
look at the voulkus slashes. hand built houses on legs.
copper matt raku...over and over
again til one goes...hmmmm.
no copy work in america. that is for sure.

Mel,

Is it possible I haven't had a problem because I have metal bestos Stainless
Steel pipe? I presently have a metal roof (no wood near anywhere) so I've
never been too concerned. I also have about 5' of hard bricks of chimney
before it fits into the stainless pipe. Maybe that makes a difference.!!!
However, my next installation will be under a wood framed roof, beams and
all. (no choice) For this reason, I am very interested in all of the expert
opinions.

When I disassemble this stack, I will be able to see what has happened to
the inside of the pipe. Nothing has every looked suspicious --- glowing red
hot or so forth. I do know that it is not rusted on the exterior and I live
in the Pacific Northwest where it rains 6 mo out of the year. I also have it
sealed against the metal roof with silicone caulk rather than flashing and
it has never melted the caulk which I find somewhat comforting. Moving to
Florida and living on the water will play havoc with materials especially
metal. The marine environment is rather harsh on things especially metal
and rusting is something that seems to happen almost overnight.

I have tried to take a reading of the temperature of the pipe at the roof
line but quite frankly have never been able to get close enough to it
without risking major injury. I fire to ^10.
