Hi Tony:

By next year you'll be into blues -- maybe nice quiet chuns, eh? Or will you
go for those bright bao copper blues or better yet Noxzema blue. :-)
Your note reminded me of a New Zealand Potter visiting here in the 80's. I
forget the question he was asked (pertaining to why he chooses to make what
he makes, etc.) and he said that he had five kids to feed and clothe and so he
made a bit of everything.! His philosophy was that if someone came into his
showroom, they should be able to find something there that they would like.
He had nice double bourry box wood kiln, did polished, pit fired porcelains
with black and copper red flashes, I think he did salt as well and I'd chance
a guess that he probably made blue pots and even some raku and whatever else
might be salable. Five kids eat a lot!
I remember seeing Ricardo Montalban on the Tonight show years ago and when
Johnny asked him about his choices of film roles, he mentioned reading a
script and thinking it was pure crap and then his wife told him that one of
the kids needed braces and he re-read the script and thought "Well, I think I
can bring something good with these lines on page 42." It put it all in
perspective.
Unless the professional potter is funded by a teaching job, inheritance,
lottery winnings, or have found a style so unique and grand that the world is
clamoring to buy everything they produce, then taking into consideration the
tastes and preferences of their potential buyers is probably a good business
move.

Warmest regards,
June (still looking for the perfect blue and the perfect shino!)
